Biographical Sketch of Ian FaulksIan Faulks served as the Director of the STAYSAFE Committee (Joint Standing Committee on Road Safety) in the New South Wales legislature for 15 years, where he led road safety policy and program review activities. Among other accomplishments, he prepared the reports and recommendations that resulted in the introduction of lower speed limits in urban areas across Australia, lower speeds around schools in New South Wales, and the major upgrading of the New South Wales graduated driver licensing scheme for young drivers in 2000 and 2007. He led major inquiries into speed management; drug driving; alcohol-impaired driving; driver fatigue; railway level crossings; traffic management and safety around schools; and child pedestrian safety. His work has brought a strong focus on governance relationships in public sector agencies and private corporations, examining the alignment of strategic planning, business planning, and annual reporting processes, as well as examining issues in decision making and ethical conduct. Ian has convened a number of major national and international transportation safety conferences on themes such as distracted driving; young driver safety; developments in vehicle technologies and safety systems; transport planning and road safety; and older driver licensing. Ian has also advised governments in Sweden, China, South Africa, Mauritius, New Zealand, the Irish Republic, the UK and US on transportation safety matters and other areas of public policy making. He has also led studies into the use of prescription, over-the-counter and complimentary medicines in children and young people; reviewed educational issues associated with children in out-of-home care; and reviewed NSW legislation on a range of youth issues. He serves on the state executive of the Australasian College of Road Safety.
